About MaryJane Shimsky

MaryJane Shimsky, a 22-year Hastings-on-Hudson resident, was first elected by the 12th legislative district for her seat on the Westchester County Board of Legislators by Special Election in February of 2011.

Since taking office, MaryJane has made maintaining County infrastructure and reducing government spending through environmental initiatives her priorities. She now Chairs several County Legislature Committees including the Committee on Infrastructure and the Saw Mill River Basin Advisory Board (SWAB).  She also serves as Co-Chair of the Bronx River Advisory Board (BRAB)

As the Community Relations Director for Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, from 2007-10, represented the Assemblyman at community meetings, assisted constituents, and acted as liaison to local governments.

MaryJane was the vice chair of the Westchester County Democratic Committee (since 2008), and served as chair of the Hastings Democratic Committee for six years and vice chair for two. She was a Democratic District Leader for 12 years and a member of the Executive Committee of the Greenburgh Democratic Party. MaryJane has spent thousands of hours since 2004 volunteering on Town committees set up in response to the Ridge Hill development, and was instrumental in securing a $15 million settlement to be used for traffic improvements in the area.

A 1982 graduate of Yale University, MaryJane earned a law degree from NYU Law School in 1985. She worked for five years as an Assistant District Attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office Appeals Bureau. MaryJane also taught history at Tarrytown’s Marymount College before earning a Ph.D. in History from the City University of New York in 2007.

MaryJane grew up in Scranton, Pa., and she and husband David Agosto have two children, Isaac (22) and Miranda (18), who are both graduates of Hastings High School.

The 12th legislative district consists of the villages of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, and Irvington, as well as parts of unincorporated Greenburgh, including Edgemont and most of Hartsdale.
