About MaryJane Shimsky

MaryJane Shimsky, a 24-year resident of the Rivertowns, was first elected to represent the 12th Legislative District on the Westchester County Board of Legislators by a special election in February of 2011. The district comprises the villages of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson, and Irvington, as well as parts of unincorporated Greenburgh, including Edgemont and most of Hartsdale.

Since taking office, MaryJane has made infrastructure, the environment, and public health her priorities. She is currently Majority Whip for the Democratic Caucus and Chair of the Committee on Public Works. She is a member of the Committees on Appointments; Environment, Health & Energy; Law & Major Contracts; Legislation; Parks, Planning & Economic Development; Public Safety; Seniors & Constituencies; and Social Services. She is also Chair of the Saw Mill River Basin Advisory Board (SWAB) and Co-Chair of the Bronx River Advisory Board (BRAB)

From 2007 to 2010, MaryJane was the Community Relations Director for New York State Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, representing the Assemblyman in the community and acting as his liaison to local governments. From 2004 to 2010, MaryJane volunteered thousands of hours on Town of Greenburgh committees set up in response to the Ridge Hill development in nearby Yonkers, and she was instrumental in securing a $15 million settlement to be used for traffic mitigation improvements in the area.

MaryJane is a former Vice Chair of the Westchester County Democratic Committee and has served on the executive committee of the Greenburgh Democratic Town Committee. She led the Hastings Democratic Committee as Chair for six years and as Vice Chair for two years. She was a Democratic District Leader for twelve years. 

A 1982 graduate of Yale University, MaryJane earned her law degree from NYU Law School in 1985. She worked for five years as an Assistant District Attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Appeals Division. MaryJane taught history at Tarrytown’s Marymount College, before earning a Ph.D. in History from the City University of New York in 2007.

MaryJane grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She and her husband, David Agosto, have two children, Isaac (24) and Miranda (20), who are both graduates of Hastings High School. MaryJane and David now live in Dobbs Ferry.
